What’s the value of water?

And should water be worth more in a drought? Water is essential for life.  Considering if we didn’t have water we would die, water would be worth a lot more than gold, which is currently worth $45,000 a kilogram. Looking at it in a less extreme way, what would you be willing to pay to keep your garden green and have your children play under a sprinkler? Take a look at your water bill and you will find water is worth about $3 for 1000 litres (1000kg) of treated, tested, high quality water, delivered directly to your kitchen and bathroom. In fact, your water supplier has done an amazing job to store and deliver high quality water to you at such a low price. But does this mean water is less valuable? If you also consider the alternatives your water could be used for, would you value it more highly?  For example, how valuable is the water flowing in the river through your favourite national park?
